Obama and the Yogi Berra Defense

Yoggi Berra 3We all know that Obama has played it loose with words, redefining events to obscure things he didn’t want to face. “War on Terror” became “Overseas Contingency”, a massacre at Fort Hood by an Islamic radical becomes “Work Place Violence”, the rhetoric of class warfare designed to drive taxes higher for successful Americans is talked about as “Doing your fair share”.  These are just a few of the  carefully planned linguistic gymnastics we have come to expect from President but now this behavior is escalating to out  and out revisionism.  Our president is simply changing what he said to suit his need of the moment.

Professor Obama and Revisionism 101

A year ago Obama said, referring to reports that Syria has used chemical weapons against its own people:

“We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is if we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation.” Obama statement on August 12, 2012.

A clear example of an American president standing up for what he believes is morally right.  He put a flag in the ground and warned that there would be serious consequences if Assad used chemical weapons

And what he said later–  this is after 100,000+ people had been killed in Syria and there was no moral outrage by Obama.  Then 1,000+ people were reported killed by chemical weapons and Obama was forced to address his “Red Line” statement of a year ago.

“First of all, I didn’t set a red line. The world set a red line,” Obama’s statement at a Stockholm news conference on September 4. 2013

A book could be written about President Obama’s shifting story lines on almost all issues of great concern to America.  Why would an American president engage in this type of deceit and revisionism? I tried to figure it out.  I talked to friends who are psychologist and some who are just good judges of behaviors and everyone is confused and frustrated.  Then I came a across a book that Obama must have read.  It was written by an American icon in the sports world.  Based on his writings he could be construed as an original thinker.  His name, Yogi Berra, the famed catcher for the New York Yankees, the subtitle of one of his books is “I really didn’t say everything I said.”

There it is, Obama’s reason for deceptive and duplicitous communication to the American people. ‘ If a beloved sports icon can get away with it and everybody still loves him, I can too.’
